It is estimated that in Chicago this year there will be over 73,000 people with out a home. On any given night there are over 20,000 people without a home. In the United States there are approximately 1.35 million children under the age of 18 that are without a home. Those are stats that we often have a hard time wrapping our minds around.
Last night we to help make our jr. high students aware of the issue of homelessness in the United States. And even great yet, we wanted to help both our students and leaders think outside of their world and have eyes for others needs and concerns.
To accomplish this we moved TRL out for the night. The talk, worship and even the snack for the night were all outside. Every student was offered a bowl of soup and a slice of bread and we had several boxes available that students could use for shelter or just to sit on during TRL program time.
Even an hour outside helped remind me of how much I am blessed with a home, three meals a day and probably equally important - a family to spend time with. These last few weekends we have been reminded in church to be content with what we have. For me personally, the real reminder is to be generous with what I have been given.
I am convinced that this generation of students could end hunger and homelessness - our prayer is that experiences like this will give them the heart to head in that direction.
